Thermal Response Test

The Thermal Response Test (TRT) is an essential technical step for any geothermal project using high-power vertical boreholes. It enables a transition from a design based on a literature-based estimate of the subsurface’s thermal characteristics to an optimized design based on in situ physical measurements.

The TRT involves injecting a constant heat input into a test probe for a period of 72 hours. By measuring changes in the heat transfer fluid’s temperature, our engineers determine two fundamental parameters for your project:

Thermal Conductivity

the actual ability of the soil at
to transfer heat.

Thermal Resistance

the efficiency of heat transfer between the probe and the surrounding soil.

Geothermaq provides a full range of services to ensure the safety of the preliminary phase of your project.

Implementation and Measurement

  • Test Well Management: We oversee the drilling of the test well and the installation of well equipment.
  • Mobile Measurement Unit: Deployment of our test bench for in-situ data acquisition.

Interpretation and Modeling

  • Expert Analysis: Our engineers interpret the data to determine the design parameters.
  • Geomodeling: simulation of the thermal behavior of the wellfield over 25 or 50 years to ensure the long-term sustainability of the resource.
  • Optimized sizing: adjusting the number and depth of the probes to best match the soil's capacity.

The Benefits for Your Project

CAPEX Optimization

Reduce your capital costs by avoiding unnecessary
drilling through precise sizing.

01

Results Guaranteed

Make sure the system will meet your heating and cooling (Geocooling) needs over the long term.

02

Eligibility for Financial Assistance

ADEME requires the completion of a TRT to approve
funding for projects involving more than 1,000 ml
of probes through the Heat Fund.

Why Choose Geothermaq?

Géothermaq’s services comply with the current ADEME specifications: “cdc-ademe-réalisation-test-réponse-thermique-trt-20200224 Version dated 02/24/2020.”

Our RGE OPQIBI 10.07 certification and our specialization in 100% geothermal energy guarantee you a rigorous interpretation of subsurface data. Drilling, the supply and installation of the test probe, and the TRT measurement may be covered by the ADEME Heat Fund.
