The Issue

The project is part of a strategy to reduce carbon emissions and achieve industrial water savings. It involves the integration of groundwater geothermal energy to heat buildings and cool industrial processes.

This pilot project, initiated and funded by Stellantis, also aims to test the feasibility of using geothermal energy at an industrial site with a view to potentially rolling out the technology to the group’s other plants.

Our Support

Géothermaq was involved in the initial phase as a subcontractor to an engineering firm as part of a comprehensive study to draft the site’s energy strategy master plan, which included waste heat recovery and geothermal energy.

After the initial studies demonstrated the viability of the geothermal solution, Géothermaq entered into a direct contract with the project owner to carry out the remaining work through to the facility’s commissioning.

  • Feasibility study.
  • Design, supervision, and interpretation of pumping and injection tests.
  • Final sizing of the underground system.
  • Supervision of the construction of a groundwater dual-well system: drilling of a 60-meter production well and rehabilitation of an injection well.

The Benefits

  • Workshop Heating - Significant Reduction in Gas Consumption
  • ‍Control of energy costs—relatedto reduced gas consumption.
  • ‍Positive environmental impact on CO2 emissions—reduced gas consumption.
  • ‍Greater plant resilience to climate change—by replacing a cooling tower with geothermal energy for process cooling, the cooling system continues to perform effectively during heat waves.
  • ‍Positive environmental impact on water consumption: Unlike cooling towers, geothermal energy does not consume water.
  • ‍Simplified operation: Geothermalenergy requires neither Legionella testing nor biocides.
